Can mental and physical stress cause severe physical illness?

I have been having a lot of health problems lately and have been in and out of the hospital, ER, and multiple doctor's offices. I have had more tests run on me than I can count and they can't seem to find a physical source for all of my symptoms. The last time I was admitted to the hospital, they strongly suggested that the physical/mental stress I have put my body through is the root cause of my health problems.
I have lost 25 lbs. in the last 2 and a half months because I have trouble swallowing and breathing; this is almost all the time now, but the severity differs. It often feels like my throat is narrowing and there is air/food/acid is trying to come back up, but my throat gets too narrow to allow it to pass through to my mouth, making it EXTREMELY difficult to breathe I also have constant abdominal swelling and irregular bowel movements if any at all. I often get a severe discomfort at the bottom of my right rib cage and it is only relieved when I apply pressure in a very exact position (when the doctors touch/press around the area, the discomfort so unbearable it almost brings me to tears).
I am a working college student supporting myself and currently living alone. Until the recent problems occured, I often would have 10 hour days: class from 9-1, work from 2-8. I am also a double bio major and on financial aid probation (so I must pass my classes or I get kicked out). Therefore, I was getting little to no sleep so that I could stay up and study and do assignments/projects. I have pushed myself for years so I thought I could handle it.
I just turned 23 years old and I feel like I'm dying. I am at my witt's end, I would seriously do ANYTHING to feel normal and healthy again, even if that means sacrificing my schooling or my job/career... I can't live like this any longer, I'm mentally drained and physically miserable. I just have a hard time believing I have $2,000 in medical bills and stress was causing all of my problems? Could this really be?
