Can marijuana be planted and grown without help of humans outdoors?

Hello,
I am doing a research paper and i need some questions answered. Can Marijuana be grown outdoors in the northeast without help from humans? Could someone just plant a seed and let it grow?

i did this once years ago as a joke just to see if it would grow.....i just stuck the seed in a planter pot with some top soil......"willie" grew to about 3 feet tall with no assistance from me...i just let it go and did nothing......however i live in the south so i don't know about your climate affecting it.....because the plant was sitting on my front patio about 5 feet from my front door i had.to get rid of willie so i called the local pothead around the way and told him to come get it
