Can jail officers force newly surrendered inmates to strip down to their...

...underwear at the booking desk? I was sitting in the jail booking center's reception area to provide officers with some information before I actually self-surrender next Monday to serve an 18 month sentence. While I was sitting there, I started talking to a guy who was self-surrending that morning to begin serving a two year sentence. He was around 30 years old, well-dressed and seemed respectful to all the officers, but when he was called up to the booking desk to begin his processing into jail, two booking officers who looked like they were 10 years younger came up behind him, with one pushing his head down onto the desk in front and the other starting a pat-down search.

The guy protested at this treatment, but when they finished the pat-down, the two officers started removing his clothes and belongings, starting with his shoes and jacket, and then finally his shirt and pants. Within just a few minutes of being called up to the desk, the guy was standing there stripped down to just his white briefs and socks. I was in the room and there were around 15 other guys waiting as well (all men, since this was a male booking facility), so it must have been really humiliating for him to be stripped like that in public.

One of the sarcastic booking officers even made a comment about how classy he looks in his tighty-whities and dirty white socks. He was then taken to a back room, with his hands cuffed behind his back. A few minutes later, the booking officer came back with his briefs and socks, but the guy never returned. The same thing happened to another guy that was waiting in the room, but no sacrastic comments were made. Can this public stripping down to an inmate's underwear happen at a booking facility and should I expect the same treatment when I self-surrender next week?

You should get into contact with the ACLU before you go in, that behavior is not correct and if they do indeed do that to you... Well there's a nasty law suit waiting for the facility in question.
