Can iPhone bought in US be used in Germany?

I want to know if I can use the iPhone I bought in the US (maps, calls, text, etc.) while in Germany. Everyone is saying that I have to 'unlock' it or 'jailbreak' it, or even put in a different sim card. I was wondering if I can take it how it is and use it without changing anything. (I know it'll be expensive)
