I have a few Delco Remy alternators from some Chevys, they are 63 amp I believe. Most web sites that tell you how to convert the alternator into a welder tell you to remove the regulator. Will this increase the amps or will I be stuck at 63 amps?? Will an 11hp honda be enough to pull it? With the pulley setup that I have, i think at wide open throttle the alternator will be turning about 8,600 rpm (is that safe?) 6" drive pulley and approx 2.5" alternator pulley.
I need to weld some 3/16" steel and the stick welder I have will not run on my 6kw generator and I do not have access to a 50 amp 220v outlet to run it from my house. The alternator as a welder is my only cheap option.
