Can I use the wifi feature on my Sprint HTC Hero overseas (in the uk) to stay connected?

Can I use the wifi feature on my Sprint HTC Hero overseas (in the uk) to stay connected? I know I won't be able to make and receive calls, but I will have access to wifi so it would be nice if I could use the HTC wifi feature to get my email, google chat, sports scores, notifications via my phone.
