Can I use T-Mobile G1 without data plan?

So I bought a t-mobile g1 on craigslist for $200. I have T-Mobile plan without a data plan. If I put in the SIM card, will the phone work perfectly but basically without 3g? I can use wi-fi no problem, but I've been hearing that you need to have a gmail account and 3g to use the phone? So can I use the g1 with my regular t-mobile plan SIM card?
