Can I use Sweet Gum tree leaves as garden mulch?

Hi, we just moved into a home in Northern California and the previous owner had planted a Sweet Gum tree in the yard. The autumn leaves are falling from this tree and I was wondering if the leaves are safe to use in our vegetables garden mulch. I identified the tree from several websites, and it appears that the leaves have a chemical property that might not be suitable for a garden mulch. Looking for any botanical help to this question! Many thanks!
