Can I use someone else's upgrade on Verizon and add a Data Plan to my line?

My dad is eligible to upgrade his phone but he doesn't want to so he said I could have his upgrade. I want to get a Blackberry and I want to order it online. Would I be able to order it online and put the data plan on my line, or would I have to go to the store to do it?
