Can I use my o2 pay as you go sim that is in my old phone in an iPhone?

because Im asking for an iPhone for my birthday and I want to use my old sim card. Im going to jailbreak the iPhone as soon as I get it lol And if I do use my old sim card will that change the iPhone in anyway? like using the internet etc. thnks
