Can I use my friend's data plan t-mobile SIM card to bypass the google account...

...sign up from G1? I've bought a new t-mobile g1 today without contract and without the data plan. I've found out that I need the data plan for it to work. Data plan is not necessary because I would rather use the wifi. So I will ask my friend if he can let me borrow his t-mobile SIM card with data plan for temporary so I can use it to bypass the sign up at the G1. WIll that work?
