Can i use my ATT sim card in another carrier's phone?

I have a raggety at&t phone, and a friend of mine is offering me a phone that requires a sim card, but i don think it's at&t. Do you think i would be able to insert my att sim card into the other phone with a different service and it will work normally? Someone please help.
