Can I use an unlocked phone with T-mobile? (Pre-paid)?

My sprint phone is getting canceled next month.

So I'm switching over to T-mobile and getting a prepaid phone.
Thing is, I don't like any of their phones, so can I use an unlocked phone from somewhere else? I've heard something about changing the GSM but I'm not sure how that works...
