Can I use an LG the V vx9800 cellphone with a prepaid Verizon Wireless plan?

My dad had a family plan with Verizon and bought me the LG the V vx9800. We've canceled the family plan but I wondered if I could still use the phone and just buy a prepaid plan for myself?
