Can I use an iPhone as an iPod without phone service?

My sister in law gave me her old broken iPhone. It doesn't work as a phone but she was able to use all of the music and video features. Is it possible to use it just as an iPod without signing up for phone service? If so what do I need to do to authorize it on my computer without signing up for phone service?
