Can I use a vodafone mobile dongle to connect to my ps3 to the internet?

I plug my dongle into my laptop and use it fine that way, can I connect my ps3 to my laptop+dongle with an ethernet cable/modem etc and it still work?
Why do I need cradlepoint?
