Can I use a sidekick without a data plan?

OK so I have a regular t-mobile plan (500 minutes and unlimited texts), and I wanted to put my sim card in a sidekick but I dont have a data plan. I know things will erase if the phone is turned off. But all I want to work is phone calls, sms and mms. Will those features still work on a sidekick without a data plan?
