Can i update my iphone 3g unlocked to tmobile 3.1.3?

i have a Apple iPhone 3g Unlocked with Tmobile. Im running Firmware 3.1.3. everytime i try to download an app from the apple app store, some apps say that they need the 4.0 firmware software Does anyone know whether it would affect my iphone 3g if i upgrade my to Firmware 4.0.1. any good idea or advise. I would greatly appreciate it
