Can I unlocked an iPhone and use it on the AT&T prepaid pay as you go network?

I want to buy an unlocked jailbroken iphone off ebay and then use my current SIM card I am using with an old nokia phone. I assume the phone and texting part will work, but I have been reading around the middle of 2009 AT&T decided to make some change to their network so the iPhone can't be used with the pay as you go plan. Is this true? Is there a way I can use a jailbroken phone on the AT&T network with a pre-paid plan?

Unlocking has no effect upon how the phone will work on a network. Unlocking is a local issue between the phone and SIM card. The carrier uses the IMEI to determine whether the phone is acceptablle on its network. Unlocking the phone does not change the IMEI.
