Can i transfer an iphone to verizon?

Well 2morrow is my birthday & verizon doesnt have the iphone yet, but the only way i can get 1 is if its on verizon ( my family plan ) Can u transfer an iphone without a plan 2 verizon in a couple monthes or is the verizon iphone a whole different device? plzzz help my mom is shopping rite now
