Can i trade pokemon gold and silver on gameboy advanced sp?

i wanted to trade between gold and silver, from gba to gba sp, but the sp told me to save and the other didnt, and it wouldnt let me trade saying "your friend isnt ready" and stuff.
but my gold is only on the eight badge and the silver has beat the game completely.

so anyone know if its becasue you cant trade from sp to gba or you cant trade with sp or becasue the gold isnt far enough? thankss
