Can I trace my vehicle registration history?

The town of Fairfield in CT is claiming I owe them money for my car in 2001/2002 but we moved to RI in 2000. The car was registered here and had RI plates. The car and it's details are long gone. Can I prove the car was registered in RI at the time Fairfield is claiming taxes.
