Can I switch to a smartphone with a old contract on Verizon?

So right now I have a lg env touch which is a multimedia phone that requires the $10/month data but i want to change it to this Samsung galaxy my friend is gona give me and this is threw Verizon. The voice package I have now is 4000 family and when I try to change the message or data package it won't let me till I change the 4000 minutes because it doesn't exist anymore so am I gona b able to change my phones since the smartphone needs the 30/month to work. So will I b able to activate the Samsung galaxy
