Can I substitute a lower spec RAM in a Compaq Desktop?

Compaq Presario SR1215CL 184 pin, DDR 333Mhz PC2700
I have an old Emachine has 184 pin, DDR 266Mhz PC 2100

Would the PC 2100 work in the Compaq?

I guess I can try and see, just wanted some input before I go through all the trouble if someone know it not work. Thanks!
