Hi
I have been on 10mg a day of cipralex for 6 days now. I don't like it. I want to stop it and I can't get in to see the dr. before next week.
This is the first time I have been on any meRAB for anxiety. I actually don't think that I need it after reading up on the internet about anxiety. I am also on BP meRAB. Adalat.
Question is ....can I just not take anymore Cirpralex starting today? Will it do any harm? will I have any side effects? I really would like to get some good sleep..more than 1 hour at a time thru the night. I have been taking it because of dizziness that dr. thinks is anxiety.
I just want to start over. Please advise. Thanks in advance

Hi there! Typically, a doctor would have you gradually stop taking an anti-anxiety medication, but if you ever have severe side effects, then YES, you do stop taking it right away. The reason for stopping it gradually is to minimize your withdrawal symptoms. I used to take one medication and took it for a few months and started to notice weight gain, wasn't feeling any better, and was too tired on it without any improvement... I very gradually stopped taking it (per my doctor's instructions) and I still had a lot of night sweats, a lot of energy (wasn't a bad thing!), and did have difficulty sleeping and staying asleep, although I was not tired from all the energy. I also felt very warm all the time when I'm usually cold natured. You can also get possible symptoms like this when you stop taking your medication, but they shouldn't last too long and they are not severe symptoms that will cause you health problems. It's more of just an inconvenience. When I gradually stopped taking my pill, I got a lower dose to take, then took it every other day, every three days, then stopped, for a couple of weeks or so.

I would suggest calling your doctor first and asking if it would be okay for you to stop taking it. You can still go in for a visit, but they should be able to answer this question for you over the phone. If your dose is low enough, you might not need to gradually stop taking it like I did.
