Can I still take him to court for the money he owes me?

Me and my ex bf dated a while back and over the year and a half we dated, I lent him money to help him get his car, for money to buy his family presents, for a plane ticket, etc. All together I let him borrow basically $2000. I wrote every time he borrowed money down in a brown book which states how much he borrowed and what it was borrowed for.

It has now been a little over two years and he has only gave me $200 which was 2 years ago when we first broke up. I talk to him every now and then and everytime I mention the money he tells me he doesn't have a job and will pay me when he can. He does have a job though just doesn't make much and is paying off student loans.

I know there is a statue of limitations but I don't know if it applies to me or not, but what I really want to know if it is to late to take him to court to get my money? And if not how would I go about filing a court order against him? And would I need a lawyer b/c I really wouldn't be able to afford one?
and about how much would it cost to take someone to a small claims court?

You don't need a lawyer, You can take him to small claims court. There are rules for where the case must be filed. Call your local city or town court clerk and they can help you get started.

Yes, take him to court. I think the statue is 10 years. No lawyer needed for under 5 grand. Go to your local court house and ask for the small claims paper work.

Write it off to experience. Once you loaned him money the second time after he hadn't paid off the first loan you basically screwed yourself. You can sue in a small claims court but I doubt that you will win because of what I said.

Unless you have something that he signed stating the money was a loan you won't have a case. He'll just say the money you gave him was given as gifts and what you wrote down in your book won't help. Never lend money and if you have to, get a signed agreement by both parties that the money is a loan.
