Can I rid a car to the junkyard if the car's not under my name?

So here's the thing, I have a very old car sitting in my garage which belongs to my mother. Recently, I've made a purchase for another car and considering dumping off the old car at my local junkyard. The problem is the car is registered under my mother's name but she is no longer with me and as such, I will have to get rid of the car myself.

So the question is, is it legal for me to sell the car off to the junkyard even tho the car is registered under my mother's name?
