Can i remove the background from a photograph if i don't have photoshop?

actually, i found fotoflexer. it's exactly what i wanted. thanks anyway!
nevermind, i found FotoFlexer. it's a site that you upload your pic and edit, even the background. i'm not deleting this question so others with the same quandary will know about FotoFlex.

Yea gimp is your only choice since you do not have photoshop.
