Can I refurb a ford york diesel engine to increase power and torque?

My brother's bought a 27 year old hymer motorhome, after a 7 hour painful drive from Scotland, we're both keen to improve the speed and handling of 'Myrtle', especially the engine. Rather than replacing the engine would a refurb work? Many thanks.
