Can I put my tmobile sim card into a no contract phone (i.e. net ten, boost mobile) ? Will it work the same?

My phone broke and I am not elligible for an upgrade yet. I want to go to Target or Radio Shack and get a mid-priced phone. Does the brand matter with no contract phones?
