I just got a 1994 chevrolet c 2500 from a city auction. It is one of the yellow trucks that you see with the arrow boards during road construction (i didn't get one with an arrow board in case anyone was wondering). It is all metal and is in great shape. The radio that is in it now is a really old one that looks and sounds bad and I want to replace it. However, it appears to be slightly narrower than a modern radio and I was wondering if that is just because it is a truck and there is a difference between truck and car radios, or if it's because the truck is old. Will i need to mount the new radio on the dashboard or will I be able to rip the old one out and replace it like you normally would. thanks.

A typical 1994 GM full-size truck uses a 2-piece or 3-piece audio system. There's a control unit mounted above the climate controls, and an amplifier/tuner pack buried under the dash, above and to the right of the gas pedal. Some trucks also have a cassette player located under the vents in the center of the dash.

Some work trucks don't have the separate tuner/amp; in this case the amplifier and tuner are built into the control box. This is fairly rare, though.

In any event, you can't put an after-market radio into the location of the control unit. However, kits are available that allow you to put a standard "DIN" unit into the cassette player location (even if you don't have the cassette player, you can still use the kit). One kit replaces the entire panel, including the vent openings, and is available in six factory-matched colors.

Bring your truck by a local car audio shop, and they should be able to tell you what your options are.

Yes of course you can install a new radio.
All you need to do is get a dash kit that is fitted for your year and model of truck
I recommend getting it installed at a shop, but if you want to do it yourself you can.

You will not have to mount it to the dash, you can get an aftermarket stereo and install it with a dash kit

Good luck
