Can i put a 26x2.125 tyre on a 26x1.75 rim (bicycle)?

I've read a bit about this, and people say that as long as the diameter (26) is equal there's not many dramas, so it seems like it should be play, but I don't want to buy new rims If they aren't going to fit...
