Can I own a ceramic kiln in my back yard?

Well I'm going to be out of school shortly and well since I really love ceramics I was wondering if a could own a kiln and have it in my back yard. My mom says it might not be possible because the town would probably not let me because it could do some kind of harm.

I would appreciate if a could get an answer soon, please.

Not if its salt-fired; it causes a noxious cloud, but an electric kiln and most kind of gas kilns would be fine. Go to the city building permit office and see if there are any rules about that. You can check to see if they have listed their ordinances online. Some electric kilns can be used inside, too.

So, yes, there are kilns you can have in your back yard. That may or may not be what your mom wants, though, and she may have just said that to stop you from asking for it!

Good luck!

Why not ask the town. Just give the town hall or the fire department a call. If you have a plan that makes it safe I can't imagine why they would object. Good luck!
