Can I keep my BlackBerry Storm from showing smiley faces in texts as emoticons?

When I get texts on my Storm and they contain smiley faces like this ":)", they show up in my messages as yellow icons. I get that they're cute and whatever, but I just really don't like them. Is there a way to keep them from showing up that way?
