Can I just update my ipod touch to restore & un-jailbreak it?

Right now my ipod touch is jailbroken. I would rather have the new apple update than have it jailbroken for various reasons. So I want to know if I can just update it, or if I have to restore my itouch then update it. HELP!
I have an ipod touch 2nd generation.
With firmware 3.1.3
