Can I jailbreak an Iphone 3g and put it on t-mobile?

My friend is selling his Iphone 3G and I was thinking about buying it from him and jailbreaking it on T-Mobile. The only thing is I have heard of people not being able to get online on it with T-Mobile. Also the Iphone isn't compatible with T-Mobile's 3G bands right? Anyway I know how to jailbreak just wanted to clarify. Thanks
