Are you referring to your employment? Most employers in the USA offer FMLA (Family and Medical Leave) which protect your employment for 12 weeks (some employers offer more time and some state variations exist). After you exhaust FMLA then the employer can choose to terminate employment if you are not able to return to your job and they have no alternate job opportunities for which you may be qualified and able to do.

If you have WC or Short Term Disability then often you receive those benefits until you are deemed able to return to work. Some employers offer Long Term Disability which begins after STD and continues to pay you until you are healed or reach a certain time period or age. I was on STD, then now on LTD and applying for SSDI per the requirements of my LTD company.

What you need to consider is that if you hurt yourself on the job, your employer is responsible for you salary if you are out of work. IF you had a note from the doctor requiring you NOT to lift and you do it anyway, your employer has a good case for not having to pay your salary if you hurt yourself again. Which is a distinct possibility if you are already hurting. So the option is yours. You can try to hide your doctor's letter and run the risk of having no income if you get hurt, or stay home until you are well.

thanks for the info. ihave been getting nurab fingers and pain in my neck due to lifting at work. i have been for xray and my 5th vertabra is pressing down on my 6th. which has been caused by the lifting. i have told my boss and she said to come to work and lift in twos. should i be lifting at all?

Well, you already have a note from your doctor saying that you can't be lifting...to me that says no lifting. If you go to work and continue to lift, even in twos, how much more damage are you going to do to your back. And is your boss willing to pay for the extra damage that will be done.

i havent got a note yet i have only just got my results back from the hospital and was just wondering shall i ask for a note to say i cant lift im due to see my doc on friday ??

Hi there! Sometimes they can offer light duty employment that does not require lifting. I think that if I remeraber correctly, I sometimes in the past, for some of my jobs, got the employment office to make a plea to help me keep my job.
