can i get power from compost?

i heard that when compost decomposes it makes heat and you
can run a pipe through it and heat water.. could this work?
how long does it take for compost to decompose?
could i generate power or electricty through these means?
 
If the compost is getting hot enough to heat a pipe filled with water the compost would be getting really dry. Dry compost with enough heat to warm up a pipe would be a definate fire hazard! I think I would leave that one alone. Good luck!
