Can I get fish that will help maintain sand?

I am planing on getting a ten gallon tank or larger and I want to use sand as a substrate. I already have a betta fish and I would like to get a few cory cats and/or an ADF. Can I get another fish or aquatic pet that would help me maintain the sand that would also get along with the others.
 
kuhli loaches would be perfect for this set up.
they burrow in the sand and basically filter through it looking for extra food etc and shoot the sand out their gills XD its pretty cool.
