Can I get all of the audio recorded in 5.1 surround to play in 2.1 stereo format?

I just got the Flaming Lips' album "The Soft Bulletin" and I have a great soundcard, and great headphones, but as you would imagine only stereo headphones. They recorded the album in true 5.1 surround, and songs alternate between forward and rear channels so if you don't have the rear and center speakers, you only get half of the song. I was wondering if there was a way to pipe all of the channels of a 5.1 song into 2.1 so even though you don't get the whole surround effect, you can still hear everything that is supposed to be there. I thought that the built in feature in my creative X-FI card, the "imitation 3D surround" which makes 2.1 sound like surround would have this build in, but apparently it does not. Short of buying a line splitter and female stereo connectors to port everything into the 2.1 channel, is there any software that can be used? Also, any software that will convert 5.1 songs into 2.1?
Must note, I do not have the CD, only MP3 or OGG files.
As you might have inferred, I want to play it on my computer.
