Can I get advice for backpacking through Europe?

I heard that in some countries you can stay at the places nuns live for a small fee. I'd like to pick up small jobs along the way bar tending, waiting tables or teaching English. Anything you can contribute will be great.

I want to start in Dublin and end in Italy beginning mid April ending August or September.
I am wondering about street performing. what are the rules? I'm a singer.
 
Stay in youth hostels and ask people there about odd jobs. Some may let you stay for free if you help recruit guests for them by handing out fliers at the train station or bus stop.
