Can I get a good Bicycle for $400? What brand and model?

Can I get a good Bicycle for $400? What brand and model? I was told at a bike shop that i need a medium size bike or a 19'' bike. My height is 5'9''
I'm looking for a hybrid bike
 
There are a lot of good ones on amazon. Check the source provided. You should be able to get one for around or under $400. :)

You should be able to find a low end one for that amount. Forge has the M Street and Vero bikes for $250.

Yes it's enough to buy a respectable hybrid; you won't get the best ones at that price brand-new but it's worth looking around for secondhand bikes.

$400 will buy you an average quality new hybrid or a very good quality pre-owned one. Brand and model is very much a question of personal taste; I like Specialized brand bikes but at the moment I'm quite happy riding a 20 year old Ridgeback MTB because it suits me.
