Can i get a deal on phone before contract expires?

For Verizon Wireless,

Is it possible to get a good deal on a phone before your contract expires? I have like 5 months left, but my phone is totally broken. I want to buy an awsome new phone, like droid. Will they give me some sort of discount?

Three days ago My wife broke her enV2 less than 6 months into her 2 year contract. She called and talked to a really cool lady that gave her a reduced price plus $100 rebate for a total of $230.00 on a Droid. Its all about who your talking to, what mood theyre in that day and how cool YOU are on the phone with them. Try it, it couldnt hurt. and try a few times if you have to. Just remember, dont act like they owe you, and let them know how happy you are with thier service. just kiss @$$.
 
It's my understanding that replacing a Verizon 24 mo contract with a new Verizon 24 mo contract is without penalty only after 20 mos, otherwise there's a penalty, and you then enter new 24 mo contract on new phone at fully subsidized price. I'm not sure how to relate this to asand1 post above, current Droid 24 mo deal in Chicago area is $199, plus waiving the $199 on second phone if take out a second 24 mo contract. If same advertised pricing where asand1 is, then sounds like he paid $31 penalty to replace old contract. No criticism, just trying to make sense of this, called Verizon, got exact same story. Possibly some hidden sympathy discount available for cases like asand1 where phone broke less than 6 mo into contract.
