I have a Bradford Pear in the back yard, and because of the rain & wind this past week, the largest branch broke off right at the trunk. The tree is about 10-12 years old with maybe a 15' canopy and about an 8" trunk. That particular branch accounted for approximately half the foliage on that side of the tree, so now the main weight of the tree is the side facing the house.
I'd like to save the tree if it's possible, but I don't want to take the chance of what's remaining to fall into the house because of the lopsided weight distribution. Can I cut some of the opposing branches off to even it out? Do I need to seal it where the branch broke off? Even if I need to cut the tree down, any help would be appreciated.
