Can I duck tape my trekking poll to my backpack if I put it in the checked lug?

I would tie them to your luggage or lock them on some how, duct tape can just peel off and the glue may remain on your luggage. I`m guessing you have a backpack you are checking since you have trekking poles. There has to be a better, more secure way to bring them along. I wouldn't be suprised if the go missing if you duct tape them.
