Your best bet is to contact the California DMV and ask them. Your question doesn't specify if your family has moved to California permanently or if that is a summer home. If you are now a resident of California and are supposed to change your driver's license over to a California license. The problem is to get a learner's permit you have be 15 1/2 minimum, so the DMV will not give you a learner's permit. So if you try and drive around with an Alberta learner's when you are a California resident the police can charge you. If the home in Palm Springs is a winter or vacation home then according to the website below you definitely cannot:

"If you are a visitor in California over 18 and have a valid driver license from your home state or country, you may drive in this state without getting a California driver license as long as your home state license remains valid."

You best bet is to call the California DMV and ask them. You can get a phone number from the site below.

I've driven on dry roads, on icy roads, and in the pouring rain, and have lots of experience with night driving.
