Can I drive a hire car on unsealed roads in New Zealand?

We want to tour Northland, and the Coromandel, Hot Water Beach etc, but are the roads to these unsealed, can we take a hire car down them or do we have to hire a 4WD?
What about the insurance on the hire car?
