..."cousins"? Ok. this is how it goes.
My uncle (father's brother) has a son with a (now married) wife. He is my "cousin" (or a "brother from uncle" as we say in our country), and my father's nephew. But, the mother of that "cousin" of mine has a father (he would be his grandfather) who has some sort of fatal brain genetic illness which is "inherited".
Now my question to you is....can I somehow (also) get that disease from the mother's side of that "cousin" of mine? Is his mother a "cousin" for me as well, or only my uncle?
