Can I damage my glow plugs by leaving the ignition on without starting the car?

I'm supposed to wait until the glow-plug light goes off before starting my car. A few days ago I left the key turned for several hours, and now the car won't start (I did drive it in-between, though). Is it possible that the glow plugs kept warming up the whole time and ended up overheating?
 
not really they turn off after a minute most likely something else like battery but then there is always the chance they bad... does the motor try to start turns over but dont start maybe that or fuel filter dont turn over battery maybe not sure without seeing it or hearing what it does
