Can I change the color of the water in my fish tank?

I noticed that the Betas at the fish store are in colored water, and I was wondering if I could change the color in my freshwater tank. I have a couple guppies and a platty. I also think I still have a couple fish left in the tank, but I also have a crab who likes to eat them. I also have 8 baby plattys in the tank. Can I change the water to blue? or will this hurt them. Please only respond if you've tried this, or know the answer for sure.

If you mean dye, then i have not tried it but you can use colored light bulbs for a similar effect

the ones in the fishstores fishtank proabably have a liner around the tank.
i wouldnt color the water. it might kill them

maybe you could wrap a colored peace of paper around the OUTSIDE
of the tank.
